AGE Global Rice Weekly Review
Pakistan & Global Market Review — 23 September 2026
The global rice market is becoming firmer, but the picture remains mixed. Lower production expectations, weather concerns in South Asia, steady import demand and higher logistics costs are supporting prices. At the same time, large Indian rice inventories continue to limit the upside in international markets.
Pakistan has started FY2026-27 with stronger export performance. During July–August 2026, rice exports reached approximately 654,600 MT valued at US$391.7 million, with Basmati showing particularly strong growth. Basmati export value increased by more than 50% year-on-year, while non-Basmati rice continued to face tougher price competition.
Current Pakistan export indications show IRRI-6 5% rice around US$420–440/MT FOB, while Indian 5% rice remains noticeably cheaper. This price gap is currently one of the main challenges for Pakistani exporters in highly price-sensitive African and Asian markets.
Globally, India remains the key market driver. A smaller crop could support prices, but its very large government stocks may continue to cap any major upward movement. Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar also remain important competing origins.
Shipping and freight are another major concern. Higher bunker costs, Middle East tensions and continued disruption around key trade routes are increasing delivered costs and making short-validity freight quotations more important.
Market Outlook
For the next 7–15 days, the rice market is expected to remain stable to firm, with Basmati holding a stronger position than commodity white rice. Over the next 30–60 days, India's harvest, Asian weather conditions, buyer activity and freight costs will determine the next major price direction.
